When Is The Last Time You Danced With God

Does God dance? To be honest, I had never thought about it. That was until a couple of years ago when I came across the topic in a most unusual way.

A friend and I took a bus trip to Kentucky to visit the Ark Encounter (you can check it out here). It was an awesome trip that we both enjoyed very much.

But it was the trip home that got me thinking about dancing with God.

Not What I Was Expecting

On the long ride home the tour guide did what always happens, they played a movie. On this particular trip, they chose to show Evan Almighty starring Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman. It was so appropriate since it is a nonsensical account of how God asks a modern-day skeptic to build an ark.

It was cute and entertaining and seemed to be headed to a predictable outcome. But it was the final scene that really caught my attention.

At that moment, for the first time, I entertained the thought of dancing with God, and I was more than intrigued.

The Joy Of Dancing

You see I grew up with parents who loved to dance. I heard the stories of how in the 1930’s and 1940’s, long before I was born, they had traveled all over the country to listen to and dance to all the famous bands of the Big Band era.

Growing up not only do I remember the beauty of watching them dance together but also how they danced with me.

It was not unusual to walk into the house and have either my mom or dad grab me and place my feet on top of their feet and begin dancing through the house.

The dance that started in the kitchen often ended at the opposite end of the house in the living room.

As a child sometimes I laughed and enjoyed it and sometimes I just endured it, but I treasure those memories now.

And at that moment on a bus heading toward home, having just watched the ending of Evan Almighty, the memories of precious bygone days swept over me and I began to ponder what it would be like to dance with God.

Take a minute to watch the final scene of the movie.

Does God Really Dance

To answer that the question, “Does God Really Dance?” let’s look at Zephaniah 3:17 (NASV) “ The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy. He will be quiet in his love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.”

Do you know that the Hebrew word translated ‘rejoice’ means to “spin around under violent emotion”? The phrase “rejoice over you” literally means to “dance, skip, leap, and spin in joy.”

That means the last part of this verse is more accurately translated, “He will dance over you with singing.”

So the answer to my question is yes, God does dance. But in addition to dancing over us with joy, He also wants to dance with us.

What happens when two people dance together?

Walk With VS Dance With

As believers, we often talk about our walk with the Lord. But what does that actually mean?

The truth is when we walk with someone there is often not that much interaction. However, when we dance with someone it’s as if we become one, moving together in synchronicity.

That’s how I want my relationship, my life, with God to be, moving together step by step.

As we dance with God, it’s important to remember that it’s God’s dance and we are dancing with God.

Who Is Leading The Dance

The other element of dancing with someone that we mustn’t forget is that someone has to lead and someone has to follow.

It requires trust to be the follower. We could remain in the perceived safety of sitting and watching, or we can let His loving arms embrace us as we follow His lead.

When we trust we can dance with God knowing He will lead. Lead through the twists and turns, joys, and sorrows of life.

When we allow Him to lead we will feel His intimate embrace as we move together as one. As we feel His heartbeat, our hearts come alive.

The time is now so don’t sit out this dance.

“The world offers countless songs. Most cause us to forget who we are. Only God can write your theme song. Discover it as you dance with Him.” – Allen Arnold

I hope you dance!
