Is It Really Possible To Live A Courageous Life?

Are you possessing your future or is your future possessing you? Are you living a life of intentions or are you living an intentional life?

At the beginning of 2014 I  asked myself these questions, and quite frankly I didn’t like the answer. There are so many things I want to do. So many dreams. And yet I find myself drifting. Drifting through the days, the weeks, the months, the years.

Coming Face-To-Face With Our Fears

What prevents me from living the life I desire to live, the life God created me to live? What holds me back from pursuing my dreams? If I am honest with myself, I have to admit that I feel overwhelmed and afraid. Afraid to try and fail, afraid of what people will say, afraid to disappoint God. Have you experienced something similar?

I found myself reading the book of Joshua as I pondered these questions. I realized that Joshua found himself facing an unknown future. After 40 years of leading Israel, Moses has died, and Joshua is appointed his successor.

I’m fairly confident Joshua is feeling pretty overwhelmed at this point. After all, he witnessed God do some pretty amazing things through Moses over the last 40 years. In chapter one, God has a “little chat” with Joshua and makes him some pretty incredible promises.

Remember These Two Things

God tells Joshua there are two things he needs to keep in mind as he begins this new adventure. First, he needs to find his strength and courage in God alone. Second, Joshua needed to get grounded in the Word of God.

And what was the result of Joshua finding his strength and courage in God alone and being completely grounded in God’s Word? The answer is at the end of verse 8: “Then you will be prosperous and successful.” In other words, Joshua would possess his future, the future God desired for him.

So what does that have to do with you and me? I mean, it’s great for Joshua but how does it apply to us? What about the situations we are facing? What about our future?

Please note God did not tell Joshua that everything is going to be great and wonderful or his days would be easy. However, He did promise to be there for him every step of the way.

Courageous Trust

The lesson for us here is that when we find our strength and courage in Christ alone, we can pursue our dreams. Pursue the future that God wants for us. It means that when we are grounded in His Word, we are better able to understand the situations and circumstances that come our way.

For me, it meant stepping out in courage and starting this blog not knowing if anyone would read it. It also meant retiring early with an unknown income status in order to focus on my writing. That’s scary for someone who likes everything wrapped up in a neat package.

I have never thought of myself as a courageous person, but I’m learning that when I place my total trust in Jesus, He supplies all the courage I need one step at a time.

What does it mean for you to step out in courageous trust? Perhaps it’s something that God has been placing on your heart for a long time, but you haven’t taken the step of faith because like me you’ve lacked courage. Be strong and courageous and possess your future!

A Command And A Promise

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:19 NIV

Will you join me in praying? Father, I take your promises to Joshua as my own. I will trust you no matter what life brings my way because I know you will never fail me or abandon me. Help me to be faithful in reading and studying your Word. I know you wrote it so that I could know you and learn your ways. Place its truth deep in my heart. Give me the courage and the strength to obey you and possess my future. In Jesus name, Amen
